Lexical Tones in Sylheti

چکیده
In this paper we examine the status of lexical tones in Sylheti. Sylheti is generally considered to be one of the varieties of Bangla (belonging to the Indo-Aryan language family). The consonant inventory of Sylheti has undergone significant reduction and restructuring, and lost all the aspirated stops due to obstruent weakening ([bai>bai] „brother‟, [lat̪i> lat̪i] „kick‟) and spirantization of the underlying voiceless bilabial stop (both aspirated and unaspirated) [p] and [p] ([por] > [ɸɔr] „read, [pul] > [ɸul] „flower) and voiceless velar stop (both aspirated and unaspirated) [k] and [k] ([kali] > [xali] „ink‟, [ [kal > xal] „drain/channel‟). These processes gave birth to numerous homophones. Eight native speakers of Sylheti participated in a production experiment which recorded their utterances of 60 homophonous words (in a carrier sentence). However, in this paper we have concentrated only on the tonal properties of 24 monosyllabic words. The results show that the loss of breathy voice contrast and spirantization is compensated with a higher f0 in the adjacent vowels. The result of one-way ANOVA shows a highly significant effect of tone on f0 (measured at various points such as f0 at vowel mid-point (measured in Mel) p < 0.05, [F (1, 414) = 67.06, p = 0.00)], max pitch (measured in Mel) p < 0.05, [F (1, 414) = 26.21, p = 0.00], min pitch (measured in Mel) p < 0.05, [F (1, 414) = 40.83, p = 0.00], average pitch (in Mel) p < 0.05, [F (1, 414) = 48.18, p = 0.00].

Perception of Lexical Tones in Sylheti
Tone as a phonological category is capable of distinguishing the meanings of two lexical words by varying the pitch height and/or contour differences. In a tone language, it is indispensable for a hearer to perceive the f0 fluctuations (and the phonetic and phonological properties) associated with distinct speech signals that distinguish the lexical meanings (Yip 2004, Francis et. al 2003). To ...
متن کاملCorrelation between Sylheti Tone and Phonation
The canonical theories of tonogenesis distinguish voiced obstruents as the pitch suppressor of the following vowels whereas their voiceless counterparts are predicted to raise it (Yip 2004, Hombert 1978). These predictabilities however, do not seem to work in Sylheti which observes a high tone following the loss of breathiness contrast ([d n] „p ddy‟ [d >d ], [d n] „don te‟), and/or a low tone ...
متن کاملLexical and post-lexical tone in Choguita Rarámuri
This study proposes a model of the intonation of Choguita Rarámuri (Tarahumara), a Uto-Aztecan language spoken in Chihuahua, Mexico. Tonal patterns of utterances were examined by varying the length of a word and a phrase, the location of lexical stress-tone, and sentence types. The only attested prosodic unit above the prosodic word is the Intonational Phrase (IP), which is usually marked by a ...
متن کاملTones and Intonation: Some Current Challenges
It is well established that lexical tones and intonation are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, the presence or absence of lexical tones in a language does not by itself constitute a fundamental typological divide for intonation systems. Two dimensions of typological diversity are brought out: (i) concerning lexical tone systems, it is suggested that the analysis of contour tones into sequences ...
متن کاملLexical tone in the spoken word recognition of Chinese
Constraints of lexical tones on semantic activation in spoken word recognition of Chinese were investigated in three crossmodal priming lexical decision experiments. In Experiments 1 and 2, disyllabic compound words that shared the same segmental templates but differed in lexical tones (e.g., tiao4 yue4 vs. tiao2 yue1, jump vs. treaty, numbers indicating tone types) were used as auditory primes...
